Epidimilogical, Clinical and Translational research
Our Research programme in Nephrology has multiple strands that focus on clinical epidemiology of kidney disease, clinical trials for slowing disease progression, and the genetics of kidney disease.
Our group has published on treatment strategies for end-stage renal disease; cardiovascular health and cardiovascular risk assessment in chronic kidney disease; disparities in healthcare provision; and more recently the application of IT communications systems in clinical and epidemiological research.
Each year we offer 1-2 clinical tutors/research fellows the opportunity to join our programme and benefit from our research team and programme. Successful individuals are urged to pursue an MD thesis in a research area while developing skills in study design, database management, biostatistics and statistical modelling.
With the increasing availability of linked electronic health records, long-running cohorts, and high-throughput technologies, the potential for epidemiology service to improve the care of patients with kidney disease is greater than ever before.
Clinical trials are part of clinical Research and at the heart of all medical advances. Clinical trials look at new ways to prevent, detect, or treat disease or look at other aspects of care, such as improving the quality of life for people with chronic illnesses.
Translational Research provides an opportunity to improve outcomes and reduce disparities in CKD by pragmatically developming and conducting effectiveness studies and establishing evidence-based interventions to improve the delviery and quality of patient care.
Our Research programme has multiple strands that focus on clinical epidemiology of kidney disease, clinical trials, medical devices, Health service research and Quality of Care
Burden and Porgression of Kidney disease in the Irish Health System
Acute kidney disease in the Irish Health System
Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Outcomes in End Stage Kidney Disease
Dialysis strategies in the treatment of kidney failure
Inflammation and Bone Mineral Abnormalities in Chronic Kidney Disease
Quality of Life in Chronic Kidney disease and its determinants
We conduct and support clinical, epidemiological and translational research while fostering research training and mentoring opportunities to create new knowledge and to improve health of patients with CKD.
